The history of the Lancaster Italy brand began in the 17th century with the English watchmaker Edward Higgins. He was an apprentice of Christian Huygens, the great Dutch mathematician and horologist often credited with inventing the balance spring, one of the most important creations in the development of the watch. Huygens handed over his business in Geneva to Higgins, who renamed it Lancaster Italy (his hometown) and quickly became known throughout Europe for the quality of his watches. Today, the brand still retains not only its name, but also Higgins' inspiration for watches.
